The WOLVES were captive-born animals that could never be released into the wild. The GWDC agreed to take numerous pups from different litters. These wolves were given the opportunity to develop strong social ties and have since formed cohesive packs. The wolves at the Center act as ambassadors, providing a greater understanding of the predator in the Yellowstone ecosystem.
The BEARS at the Center have all come to reside here for different reasons. Many were orphaned in the wild as young cubs. Some were able to obtain human food, unsecured pet foods, garbage and other food attractants which led to them being labeled “nuisance bears”. If a nuisance bear, or problem bear, cannot be relocated in the wild, they are removed and destroyed if captive homes cannot be found. Whether these bears are cubs or adults, once they are removed from the wild they can never return. The GWDC has given these animals a second chance.
The RAPTORS are all non-releasable birds that have been injured or abandoned in the wild.
The North American River OTTERS are the new inhabitants of the Banks of the Yellowstone: Riparian Habitat. These five otter ambassadors will help educate and offer grassroots involvement that will ultimately save wild predators & the wild places in which they live.
